about ellen

Originally from Vancouver, BC I moved to New York over a decade ago, did a Master’s Degree in Health & Human Sexuality Education at NYU and promptly went to work preaching SexEdvice to whomever would listen. This included a stint at Manhattan’s Museum of Sex, after which I went to India to create sex ed. programs for the children of red light area sex workers.

Once I returned, I ran sex ed. and HIV prevention programs for a South Bronx after school organization and taught human sexuality at Rutgers Newark. Currently, I am the Health Ed. coordinator at a Brooklyn-based school and teach human sexuality at Brooklyn College. I also run the GLBT Teens site for About.com, and write lesson plans for the Southern Poverty Laws Center’s Teaching Tolerance program.

For four years I was also the sex expert for Planned Parenthood’s teenwire.com where I answered hundreds of questions a week from teens wondering, “My boyfriend says if I swallow his sperm my acne will clear up-Is that true?” and “Can a boy grow boobs if he takes his sister’s birth control pills?”

But really, one of my all time favorite projects was writing the sex education blog on gURL.com. And since not all my entries got posted before the gig was through, I decided to share them here.
